PARTICIPATE IN WORSHIP


adult volunteers

ALTAR GUILD
The Altar Guild prepares the altar and paraments for weekly worship and distributes flowers to homebound members.
ASSISTING MINISTER
The Assisting Minister helps the Pastor lead worship by reading various prayers throughout the service and serving where needed.
CAMERA OPERATOR
Camera Operators run the live-streaming system during worship. 
COMMUNION ASSISTANT
Communion Assistants help distribute the sacrament of Holy Communion during worship. The Pastor distributes the bread and the Communion Assistants distribute the wine.
​GREETER
Greeters are responsible for saying hello to all members and visitors as they arrive for worship in the narthex, just inside the front doors.
​LECTOR
​In worship, the lectors read aloud the daily lessons from the Old Testament, Psalms, and New Testament.
​USHER
Ushers distribute worship materials, such as bulletins, collect the offering, dismiss pews to come forward for communion, and operate the livestream of the service.
​WORSHIP LEADER
A worship leader will fill in for the Pastor when she is away on vacation or otherwise unable to lead worship. The worship leader will preach and lead a Service of the Word.

CAMERA OPERATOR (14+ years old)
Camera Operators run the live-streaming system during worship.
COMMUNION ASSISTANT (14+ years old)
Communion Assistants help distribute the sacrament of Holy Communion during worship. The Pastor distributes the bread and the Communion Assistants distribute the wine.
CRUCIFER (14+ years old)
The Crucifer processes into the worship service carrying the processional cross. They lead the senior choir, pastor, and assisting minister to the front of the sanctuary.
ACOLYTE (12+ years old)
Acolytes are responsible for lighting the candles in the chancel at the beginning of worship and extinguishing them at the end of worship. They are also responsible for ringing the church bell during the Lord's Prayer. This is a requirement for all Confirmation students.
LECTOR (12+ years old)
In worship, the lectors read aloud the daily lessons from the Old Testament, Psalms, and New Testament.
BELL RINGER (10+ years old)
The bell ringer is responsible for ringing the church bell when the congregation prays the Lord's Prayer. An usher will help guide the child/youth until they are comfortable.
GREETER (6+ years old)
Greeters are responsible for saying hello to all members and visitors as they arrive for worship, as well as handing out that Sunday's bulletin.
JUNIOR USHER (6+ years old)
Junior Ushers are responsible for helping the adult ushers collect the offering during worship. Young children volunteering should feel comfortable walking up to the front of the sanctuary without the assistance of parents or guardians.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Members of the Christian Education Committee assist with teaching weekly Sunday School classes and special events, such as Vacation Bible School.
YOUTH MINISTRY COMMITTEE (7-12 grades)
The Youth Ministry Committee works with the middle school and high school youth to host events and other educational opportunities. The Youth Ministry Committee also supports the students who attend the ELCA National Youth Gatherings.
church LEADERSHIP & OPERATIONS

CHURCH COUNCIL
Members of the Church Council gather monthly to carry out the business of the congregation. They vote on needed constitutional changes, make decisions on behalf of the congregation, and work closely with the Pastor and Church Office to carry out the ministry of St. John's.
FINANCE COMMITTEE
​
Members of the Finance Committee meet quarterly to review the church's investments and monetary needs. Together, they approve the yearly budget to present to Church Council.
PROPERTY TEAM
Members of the Property Team assist with carrying out needed repairs and updates around the church. A responsibility of this team is collecting needed quotes for larger building projects in collaboration with the property representative on the Church Council.
FEEDING MINISTRies

​BREAKFAST BUNCH COMMITTEE
Members of the Breakfast Bunch Committee plan and organize the summer Breakfast Bunch program hosted by St. John's. Members of this committee also assist to host the program during the months of June, July, and August.
CATERING COMMITTEE
Members of the Catering Committee prepare meals for special events, seasonal dinners, and monthly soup and sandwich sales. Volunteers are needed the day of the events for set-up, distribution, and clean-up.
COMMUNITY LUNCHEON COMMITTEE
Members of the Community Luncheon Committee prepare meals for the free bi-monthly luncheons following worship on one Sunday afternoon per month. Volunteers are needed to help the day of the luncheon with set-up, distribution, and clean-up.
SOCIAL MINISTRies & OUTREACH

​CONGREGATIONAL CARE TEAM
The Congregational Care Team works closely with the Pastor to contact and care for the homebound members of the congregation. This team places monthly calls to members in need of care and report back to the Pastor as needed.
​SEWING GROUP
The Sewing Group meets the first two Fridays of each month to make quilts and lap robes for Lutheran World Relief and other non-profit organizations. All supplies are provided.
The photos below are from our 2022 Blessing of the Quilts. 136 quilts were donated to local organizations such as: Allentown Rescue Mission, Cay Galgon Life House, Gracedale/Lutheran Home at Topton, KidsPeace, Ripple Community Center, and Sayer Child Center. The largest quilts were donated to Lutheran World Relief.

​SOCIAL MINISTRY COMMITTEE
The Social Ministry Committee hosts events throughout the church year to benefit various ministry initiatives around the church (outreach and Christian education). This committee also puts together holiday baskets for our homebound members.
​W.I.S.H. CIRCLE
The W.I.S.H. Circle is a women's group, which stands for Women Involved in Sharing and Helping. The W.I.S.H. Circle hosts St. John's annual Basket Social and Graduation Dinner, and they provide financial support for youth group initiatives and other ministries in the congregation.
WORSHIP & MUSIC MINISTRIES
SENIOR CHOIR
The choir sings during Sunday worship and presents a Christmas Cantata every year. 
​WORSHIP & MUSIC COMMITTEE
Members of the Worship & Music Committee gather bi-monthly to plan worship for the upcoming church season.
