At a person's death, the church shares the grief of those who mourn and remembers the brevity of life on earth. At the funeral we give voice to sorrow, thank God for our loved one, and entrust this companion of ours into the hands of God. Trusting in God's promise in baptism that we are claimed by Christ forever, we rest in the sure hope of the resurrection. When the church gathers to mark the end of life, Christ crucified and risen is the witness of worship, the strength of mutual consolation, and the hope of healing.
COMMENDATION FOR THE DYING
When a person is near death, the pastor may be notified so that she can bless them and gather with their loved ones for a time of prayer, remembrance, and reflection. At the conclusion of the commendation, the pastor will anoint the person with chrism, a holy oil used at baptism, to remind them of the promise of eternal life.
PLANNING A FUNERAL SERVICE
Contact the church office at (610) 767-6361 to speak with the pastor about planning a funeral service. It is recommended to verify the desired date with the church prior to arranging a date with the funeral home. This will ensure that the church is open and available when requested. The church cannot host funeral services on Sunday mornings between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
All visitations at St. John's will take place in the Fellowship Hall on the first floor. Unfortunately, due to the structure of the building, caskets cannot be carried into our second-floor sanctuary. Instead, the casket can be placed in the narthex (inside the front doors) or can remain in the Fellowship Hall. You may discuss these options with the pastor.
When arranging a funeral service, please complete the document below and return it to the church office.
